Sequoia PTSA's weekly eNewsletter in partnership with the Sequoia High School Education Foundation
Principal's Message
I informally surveyed a number of students in the halls at lunch this past week, asking them what highlights they were going to remember about the 2015-16 school year.  Among the answers: College Day, the AVID overnight college visit, a visit to the Stanford pathology lab, and a recent project in art classes where students created Dale Chihuly-inspired hanging sculptures.

All these memories were made possible because of the Sequoia High School Education Foundation.  The SHSEF funds these and MANY other projects, materials, initiatives, and activities either directly or by underwriting PTSA mini-grants which are awarded semesterly to teachers with innovative ideas to enhance student experience and learning.

It is the mission of the Foundation to support staff, projects and programs to ensure that every student has the opportunity to reach his or her highest potential.  We raise funds for college services, academic enrichment programs, staff professional development, and student and family support.

For 2015-16, thanks to the strong and growing support from our donors, we were able to fund multiple class sets of Chromebooks as well as additional sections to reduce class sizes.

We are rounding the corner into the homestretch of this year's annual campaign to fund 2016-17 and are on-track to reach our goal of $375,000 (as well as a new goal of 425 individual donors).  A big thanks to those of you who have already contributed to the annual campaign.  As we are now deep into planning for next year, I encourage those of you who have yet to contribute to do so before May 31.

Thanks and have a great week!

All Dressed Up at Prom Gallery
This past Saturday, over 500 juniors and seniors enjoyed a "Greek Gala" Prom at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco!  To help make the prom possible for some students, a Prom Gallery was held at the end of April to provide dresses for $25 or even for free.

A huge shout-out to all those who donated clothing: Debra Chin who donated dresses from her boutique closure last fall, Joey Rae on Laurel Street in San Carlos for donating new dresses and shoes, and many individuals, including Sequoia graduates, who donated new and gently used dresses!

Also big thank you's to:
  • Mayela Ramirez, Sequoia's Parent Center Coordinator, for her coordination and outreach for the gallery.
  • Tammy Bene, Gayle Hoch, Karen Lopiparo and Marta Roig for helping set-up, run, and break down the Prom Gallery.
  • The Sequoia Art Department for the use of Powell Gallery for the week.

Thank You, Volunteers!
Our parents in the Sequoia community are amazingly dedicated -- for PTSA activities alone, we estimate over 3200 hours have been spent this year on events such as staff appreciation, mini-grants, grad week planning for each class, the Reflections art program, exam proctoring and general PTSA planning.  And that doesn't even include volunteer time for sports, VPA, clubs, and other groups around the school. Thank you for enriching the lives of Sequoia students through all that you do!

The end of the year is extremely busy, and we have just a few final volunteer needs.  Sign up for a quick shopping trip, or to spend an hour or two meeting some other parents!
  • NEWEnd-of-year Staff Appreciation Lunch - the Parent Center/ELAC will mainly be hosting the event, but we need a few people to provide cases of water for the June 1 luncheon.
  • Textbook Check-in - Morning and afternoon shifts are available from May 23-June 2 to help the librarians collect textbooks. Sign up here!
  • Class of 2016 Grad Week Activities - Senior parents can sign up to help with the Grad BBQ on June 1 and the Grad Brunch on June 2. Non-senior parents are needed to chaperone the Grad night Cruise on June 3.  Sign up for Grad Week volunteering here!
  • Class of 2017 Grad Week Fundraising - Junior families, we're all set with our candy leis fundraiser, thank you!  We also will be selling concessions at this year's graduation on June 3.  Be on the look-out for information coming soon.
